7/29/04 -
Everyone was on their feet in prelims as Ashley Jones from the Joliet YMCA
in Illinois beat the old Women's 400 IM record of 4:54.95 with a time of
4:53.61. At Finals, Ashley cam back to swim a tiem of 4:53.41 setting the
new record.
For most, setting two new records in the 400 IM would be an exhausting day.
But in finals, Ashley also broke the 200 Back record of 2:16.09 swimming a
time of 2:15.50. But Tricia Weaner, West Shore, PA, was not about to be
stripped of her record in this event. Tricia beat Ashley to the wall with a
new record time of 2:15.38!
7/28/04 - OK, OK, I'm really not writing this ON 7/28 but I am writing about
7/28. You have probably all noticed that our website coverage has not been
as prompt as usual. I apologize but we have been having some real problems
uploading information and pictures to our server.
Now, as for the meet ... Well, he had to wait an extra night to do it but
Jeffrey Sudbury from the Wilton Wahoos set a new record in the Men's 50
Freestyle with a time of 23.52
In the 800 Free Styles, Leah Gingrich, West Shore, PA set a new record of
8:56.48 for the women while Chris Schenck, Northwest Dupage, IL swam 8:56.55
for a new record in the men's.
Triangle Area YMCA in North Carolina's Jessica Botzum nicely beat the
previous Women's 200 Breast record (old record: 2:37.44) in prelims with a
time of 2:36.96. BUT WAIT!!! She came back in finals to smash that time with
a new National Record of 2:34.61! Way to go Jessica!
In Prelims Bobby Savulich from Metuchen-Edison, NJ and Andrew Trepp of
Wilton, CT both made it look like the meet record in the Men's 200 Free of
1:52.97 was safe. But in finals, Andrew beat the record with a time of
1:52.25... and came in second. Bobby beat him to the wall with a time of
1:52.25 to be our new National Record Holder.
In the Women's 100 Fly, Aidan McKinlay was a 1:03.26 in prelims beating the
old record of 1:03.32. Tricia Weaner from West Shore YMCA in Pennsylvania,
however, came back in finals with a time of 1:03.22!
Event 18, the Men's 100 Fly saw six, yes SIX record breaking swims. The
prior record was 56.20. In Prelims, Andrew Langenfeld, Mount Vernon, IL swam
55.96, Pat Reams, South Shore, MA swam 55.94 and Matthew Donch, Darien, CT
swam 55.91. Of course that provided an extremely exciting swim at Finals.
There Matthew swam 56.12, Pat swam 55.87 and Andrew won the event and is the
new Record Holder with a time of 55.57.
7/27/04 - Due to lightening, this evening's finals was suspended after the
first heat of the Men's 50 Freestyle. The remaining heat of event 10, and
the complete consolation and final heats of the 200 Medley Relays will begin
the Finals Session on Wednesday evening. Our foremost concern is the safety
of swimmers and spectators.
But what an amazing day it was! In Event 5 in the morning (the Women's 100
Backstroke) Tricia Weaner from West Shore YMCA in Pennsylvania broke her own
2003 record with a new time of 1:03.22.
Then in Event 7 we were treated to a new record in the Women's 400
Individual Medley. Ashley Jones from the Joliet YMCA in Illinois swam a
2:18.89 breaking the old record of 2:19.98.
Whether it was the Opening Ceremonies, getting pumped up from watching the
Special Olympic swimmers compete, or maybe she was just holding back a
little in the morning, but Emily Brunemann from ME Lyons YMCA in Ohio
started the evening with a new record in the Women's 400 Freestyle. Emily
swam a 4:20.60 breaking the prior record of 4:21.04.
Event 5 (the Women's 100 Backstroke) was a thrilling finish. Lauren English,
Montclair YMCA in New Jersey) challenged Tricia Weaner from the starting
block to the wall. And although Lauren's time of 1:03.02 was good enough to
break Tricia's morning record, Tricia touched at 1:02.73. WOW!
