Minnesota Wins 2004 Championship

WEST LAFAYETTE-  Minnesota won its third Men’s Big Ten Swimming and Diving Championship for the third time in four years Saturday night.  The Gophers scored 714.5 points, outlasting Michigan (605) and Northwestern (478).  The Hoosiers of Indiana finished fourth with 452.5 points, Wisconsin (341.5) fifth, and host team Purdue place sixth (337).

Several record setting performances highlighted the first two days of the meet, but Saturday’s finals session topped all others.  Three all-time Conference records were set tonight, in addition to one this morning.

The 2004 Championships marked the final Big Ten meet for Michigan head coach Jon Urbanchek.  Urbanchek is considered one of the most successful coaches in Conference history.  He has guided the Wolverines to 13 Big Ten titles, one NCAA team title, and an overall Conference record of 100-4.  Appropriately, Urbanchek  was recognized as the Big Ten Coach of the Year after another outstanding season, which included a 4-0 Conference dual meet record.

Michigan Edges Penn State to Claim 2004 Big Ten Championship

MINNEAPOLIS-  All week long, the Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships has been building to a thrilling finish.   And at Saturday night’s final session, the athletes didn’t disappoint.  For the second time in three years, the team title came down to the 400-yard freestyle relay, as Penn State held a two point advantage over Michigan before the final event.  It was ultimately the Wolverines who would prevail, in one of the fastest and most exciting championships ever in the Big Ten.

Michigan finished with 604.5 team points, followed by Penn State (590.5), Indiana (563.5), Wisconsin (503), and host school Minnesota (412.5).

The 400-yard free relay proved to be the perfect ending to a fantastic meet.  As they have done all meet long, the Michigan and Wisconsin freestyle specialists battled from beginning to end.  McCullough and Pendleton went head-to-head in the final leg, with McCullough pulling it out for her team in the end in 3:18.95, to Wisconsin's 3:19.11.  Her efforts not only won the relay for Michigan, but secured the team championship for the Wolverines.  Penn State finished seventh in the 400 relay.

UC Santa Barbara Men and Pacific Women Crowned Big West Swimming and Diving Champions

The UC Santa Barbara men's team won its 25th Big West championship. The Gauchos won seven events over the four-day period, including two relays. The Gauchos won the 200 Medley Relay with a 1:30.60 time and the 400 Medley Relay with a 3:20.01 time. Last season's champs, Pacific, finished in second place followed by UC Irvine.

Cal Poly senior Ben Palmer was named Athlete of the Year. Palmer won the 200 Breaststroke event with a 2:00.27 time and finished third in the 100 Breaststroke with a 56.22 time.

UC Santa Barbara's Gregg Wilson was named Men's Coach of the Year. It marks the 12th time Wilson wins the award.

The Pacific women's squad took home the Big West championship for the third consecutive year. The Tigers won in convincing fashion, winning 14 of the 21 events, including all five relay races. UC Irvine finished second, winning three events followed by UC Santa Barbara.

Gaucho junior Jennifer Lyes was named Female Athlete of the Year. Lyes won the 50 Freestyle event with a 22.78 time, which was also fast enough to automatically qualify her for the NCAAs. She finished second in the 100 Freestyle with a 51.13 time.

Pacific's Danny May was named Women's Coach of the Year for the second consecutive season. Last year he shared the award with UCI's Brian Pajer.
