We set sail on this new sea
because there is new knowledge to be gained, and new rights to be won, and
they must be won and used for the progress of all people. For space science,
like nuclear science and all technology,
has no conscience of its own.
Whether it will become a
force for good or ill depends on man, and only if the United States occupies a
position of preeminence can we help decide whether this new ocean will be a
sea of peace or a new, terrifying theater of war.

Office of Space Science Solar System Exploration Education and Outreach Forum
intended to be a gateway for the public to the vast educational
and informational resources of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration
(NASA) that pertain to Solar System exploration.
Teachers will find lesson plans about the Solar System in the catalog. We
hope to eventually arrange the lessons by grade level in order that educators
will be able to drop them into their curriculum with ease. We also plan to
arrange them according to the national science and mathematics standards so that
teachers can teach the theme of Space Science to their students without fear of
missing key concepts that all students of each grade level must master.
Educators will also find career opportunities here, i.e., workshops,
national grants and summer job opportunities.
Students of all ages will eventually be able to follow the links within
these pages and search the catalog to do research on our space neighborhood for
papers and projects.
Space enthusiasts of all kinds will find direct access to current
research on Solar System Exploration by following the links and using the
resource catalog. Then, they can test their knowledge with challenging space
activities.
Space Science Education/Public Outreach
...The Education
Forums will serve as major centers for space science education and public
outreach in each of the four OSS Science Themes...The Broker/Facilitators will
work with the space science and education communities to identify high-leverage
opportunities for education and public outreach and help arrange collaborations
between scientists and educators.

The mission of
NASA's Earth Science Enterprise (ESE) is to develop a scientific understanding
of the Earth system and its response to natural or human-induced changes to
enable improved prediction capability for climate, weather, and natural hazards.
How are global
precipitation, evaporation, and the cycling of water changing? How is the global
ocean circulation varying on inter-annual, decadal, and longer time scales? Plus
many other topics.
How is stratospheric ozone changing, as the abundance of ozone-destroying
chemicals decreases and new substitutes increases?
What
trends in atmospheric constituents and solar radiation are driving global
climate? Plus many other topics.
What changes are occurring in
the mass of the Earth's ice cover? How is global sea level affected by climate
change? Plus many other topics.
How
do ecosystems respond to and affect global environmental change and the carbon
cycle? How are global ecosystems changing? Plus more.
How do ecosystems
respond to and affect global environmental change and the carbon cycle? What are
the effects of regional pollution on the global atmosphere, and the effects of
global chemical and climate changes on regional air quality? Plus much more.

NASA Origin Programs
The Origins Program
NASA's Origins Program seeks
to answer two enduring human questions that we once considered around ancient
campfires, yet still keep alive in today's classrooms: Where do we come from?
Are we alone?
Missions
While the majority of Origins efforts are focused on developing
space-based observatories above Earth's atmosphere, investigations on the ground
pave the way for future achievements in orbit.
Where Do We Come From? Are We Alone? To seek answers to the two
defining questions of the Origins Program, scientists have outlined four goals
that will speed us on our way to discovery:
Educator Resources
The overarching program funded by NASA that enables
researchers to pursue these questions is called "The Astronomical Search for
Origins and Planetary Systems," or ORIGINS for short. The "Forum" is the public
gateway to the research results, the data, the information, and the human
expertise behind this quest.
Launch
Programs
Project Mercury
Initiated in 1958, completed in 1963,
Project Mercury was the United States' first man-in-space program.
Project Gemini
The second U.S. manned space program was
announced in January 1962. Gemini involved 12 flights, including two unmanned
flight tests of the equipment.
Apollo-Soyuz
The mission started with the Russian
Soyuz launch on July 15, 1975, followed by the U.S. Apollo launch on the same
day. Docking in space of the two craft occurred on July 17, and joint operations
were conducted for two full days. Both spacecraft landed safely and on schedule.
Space Shuttle
The Space Shuttle is a viable part of
American History. Standing as one of NASA's foremost projects, the shuttle has
accomplished many tasks that have enhanced the quality of life on Earth. View
archives of every shuttle mission here.
Station
Programs
Skylab
Designed for long duration missions,
Skylab program objectives were twofold: To prove that humans could live and work
in space for extended periods, and to expand our knowledge of solar astronomy
well beyond Earth-based observations.
Shuttle-Mir
Phase 1 was a NASA program encompassing
11 space shuttle flights over a four-year period. It used existing assets -
primarily U.S. shuttle orbiters and the Russian Space Station Mir - to build
joint space experience and start joint scientific research.
International Space Station
The most complex engineering and
construction project in the world is taking place in space. 16 countries and
over 100,000 people are contributing to this monumental achievement.
